A variety of grasses is an important and healthy addition to the diet of all grass-loving tortoise species such as leopards, indian stars, sulcatas. It will give them a nutritious, high-fibre boost as part of a varied diet for these breeds of tortoises. Please note that not all species of tortoise are able to digest grass (such as Mediterranean/Greek, Redfoot, or Yellowfoot tortoises).
Each type of grass seed is available in a variety of weights to suit your planting needs. The types currently available are:
Timothy grass (a firm favourite with our leopards and stars)
Cat’s grass (Barley grass). Cat’s grass isn’t a specific plant but grass that is grown from seeds such as Barley grass, Oat grass, Wheat grass, or Rye grass - typically grown for cats but is great for tortoises too! These seeds are large and produce lovely thick blades of grass that our tortoises love.
Mixed rye grasses and fescues (a delicious selection of SIX different grasses: Meadow fescue, Sheeps fescue, Tall fescue, Creeping red fescue, Red fescue and bentgrass. These high fibre grasses are another favourite of our tortoises and give them a huge variety of grasses to enjoy.
Deluxe grass seed mix (a huge selection of grass seeds are included in this mix, a little of everything if you are wanting to give your tortoise a real treat!)
Note: please make sure that you ID any plants, weeds or flowers before feeding to your tortoise as seeds can be carried by birds, wind or already be in your soil at the time of sowing the tortoise seeds.

Tips for feeding the freshly grown food
You can either
use scissors to cut some of the tortoise grass and place in their food bowls as normal
or you can place the complete seed tray into their enclosure (dig into the substrate so it’s easier for your tortoise to access) then sit back and watch as they race over to tuck into the fruits of your labour!
or you can plant out the contents of the seedling tray in their enclosure
Why not have a few trays of food growing at the same time, so you can put one in the tortoise enclosure and then swap it over with another tray of food when needed.
Other seed selections
We sell a huge range of seed selections and GYO kits for you to choose from, such as our GYO deluxe flower kits, GYO deluxe weed kits, GYO tortoise-breed kits, to specific weeds or flower seeds that your tortoise will love. All are organic and sourced within the UK
