This kit is an important and healthy addition to the diet of all grass-loving tortoise species such as leopards, indian stars, sulcatas. It will give them a nutritious, high-fibre boost as part of a varied diet for these breeds of tortoises. Please note that not all species of tortoise are able to digest grass (such as Mediterranean/Greek, Redfoot, or Yellowfoot tortoises).

The kit consists of a propagator for germinating and bringing seedlings on as well as the right amount of soil and top quality seeds that have been specially selected for tortoises. After mixing in the calcium powder (supplied in the kit) with the soil, simply fill the seed cells with soil, sow the seeds according to directions and cover them with the propagator lid to keep the humidity in. Use of the seed cells is optional and you may prefer to sow directly into the seed tray - you can always you the seed cells to sow tortoise flowers/weeds seeds instead (available in our shop)!

The humidity can be adjusted with the vent on the lid so the environment can be kept just right for the seeds to grow. As they sprout you will be able to watch their progress until they are ready to cut to feed your tortoise, or plant out in your tortoises enclosure, or you can place the whole tray in your tortoise's enclosure for them to discover and enjoy.

These kits are great for beginners, children and those that want to get started straight away without having to purchase all the other bits and pieces to grow food indoors. The kits are also great if you have different breeds of tortoise, so you can grow grasses for the specific tortoise breed you have.

The starter kit consists of:

• mini propagator with clear lid and humidity vent (dimensions are 18.5cm (L) x 14cm (W) x 11cm (H) including lid)

• seed cells for planting seeds (optional use)

• small bag of organic soil (to fill the seed cells - if you prefer not to use the seed cells, then additional soil may be required)

• mini bag of calcium powder to mix in with the soil to provide calcium rich food

• packet of grass seed

• plastic plant label to mark your seed tray (useful if you have multiple seed trays with different seed mixes - or if you are growing different foods for other tortoise breeds you have)

Your tortoise food will be ready in as little as 7 days.

Each seed packet comes with simple and easy-to-follow growing instructions.

Tips for feeding the freshly grown food

You can either

• use scissors to cut some of the tortoise mix and place in their food bowls as normal

• or you can place the complete seed tray into their enclosure (dig into the substrate so it’s easier for your tortoise to access) then sit back and watch as they race over to tuck into the fruits of your labour!

• or you can plant out the contents of the seedling tray in their enclosure

Note: please make sure that you ID any plants, weeds or flowers before feeding to your tortoise as seeds can be carried by birds, wind or already be in your soil at the time of sowing the tortoise seeds.
